There are many definitions for sustainability. If you ask ten people you might get ten different answers. However, the standard definition of sustainability published in the 1987 Brundtland Report entitled “Our Common Future” (World Commission on Environment and Development) defines sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
While sustainability has its roots in the environmentalism of the past, it has evolved in response to modern forces such as limited resources, urbanization, expanding scientific knowledge and technology, growing social awareness, health and safety imperatives and the changing economics of the 21st Century.
In practical terms, sustainability is defined as an approach which is profitable, environmentally sound (i.e. minimizes harm to the environment and maintains basic natural resources) and is beneficial to the community (i.e. demonstrates support of the community and the fair treatment of all people involved in the system).
